Finding the Right Apartment |
1. |
Calculate how much rent you can afford to pay. Be sure to include all the expenses
associated with a new apartment (phone, cable, heat, and parking). |
2. |
Determine what neighborhoods you like. Investigate the available shopping, transportation,
noise, traffic, and general feel of different neighborhoods. Importantly, think
about your commute time to and from work. |
3. |
Think about the most important features and prioritize them. You probably can’t
get everything on your list, but you should get the most important items. For example,
some features to consider include number of bedrooms and bathrooms, size of unit,
age of building and interior, number of other units in the building, parking, pet
policies, and proximity to public transportation, security, laundry facilities and
storage. |
4. |
Scan the apartment listings on RentSlicer.com and sign up for RentSlicer Email Alerts
when new listings are available in your. This is a great tool to keep updated on
where available listings are located and what prices and amenities are included.
Once you’ve narrowed down the neighborhood, you can also take a drive through it
and look at the rentals. |
5. |
Review all the listings that interest you and select the ones you want to call for
an appointment. Ask the landlord about the apartment and its features. Importantly,
ask about any special rules or policies the landlord may have for the building. |
6. |
Inspect apartments carefully. Look for windows that are in good shape, good water
pressure, and smoke detectors near bedrooms, solid flooring and clean carpeting,
strong exterior doors with locks, good lighting, and clean hallways. If you see
a neighbor, you might ask them about their experience in the building. |
7. |
Fill out an application for the apartment you want. Submit it with a check for the
amount you and the landlord agree on to cover a credit check and show good faith. |
8. |
Once you agree to the rent and move-in date, read the lease carefully and ensure
you understand all the clauses. Do not sign something you do not understand. Download
the FREE Mover's Checklist. |
9. |
Pay the first month’s rent and security deposit. Ensure you receive a receipt for
both payments from the landlord. |
10. |
You should receive all the keys to the building when you give him the rent or, at
the latest, the morning of your move-in date. |
